Update June 2024
Council have reviewed the feedback received from the community on the proposed parking alterations and has decided not to proceed with the proposal. The community feedback report is now available for your review. We would like to thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.
Background
Council is proposing to alter parking restrictions in Austral Terrace. Restrictions that are currently in place which are surplus to the Australian Road Rules, are proposed to be removed.
This proposal follows on from concerns raised about the raised speeds that vehicles travel along Austral Terrace, and drivers that also use it as a cut through route. Observations raised from a number of traffic investigations have identified that parking restrictions are excessive and likely contributing to traffic concerns.
In addition to the benefits to the community of increasing the number of available parking spaces, introducing on-street parking on both sides of a street typically creates a series of natural traffic calming points where vehicles may have to slow/stop to give way to oncoming vehicles. The reduced-width carriageway and associated requirement to give way is expected to lower vehicle speeds and encourage the use of more arterial roads.
