October 2024 - project update

Consultation open on the updated concept plan and clubhouse design

Feedback on the initial concept plan released for consultation back in February / March 2024 identified the following as key themes for the project.

  • Preserving the oval for community club sports, general community use for recreation, physical activity, and dog exercise
  • Retaining the community courts, playground, rose garden and cricket nets
  • Improving car parking and traffic management around the site
  • Focusing on improving landscaping and screening plants to the northern and western boundaries of the site
  • Improving security and lighting

The community feedback report is available for your review.

Council have used these key feedback themes to further develop the concept plan and the clubhouse design.

The concept design that has been developed:

  • Provides a new clubroom building
  • Retains the oval in its current form
  • Retains the community courts, playground, rose garden and cricket nets
  • Increases the number of car parks around the building as well as Margaret Street
  • Removes the old buildings from the site and includes new screening plants
  • Provides improved layout to address security concerns

The design team has carefully crafted the concept to reflect the heritage bungalow-style housing common in the area, ensuring the development blends seamlessly into the local suburb. Drawing inspiration from Adelaide Oval, the design incorporates red brick, iconic trees, native plants and integrated pathways.

This approach respects the architectural character of the neighbourhood but also intends to deliver a sense of local pride, enhancing the value and appeal of the Glandore Oval development for residents who cherish the unique identity of their community and the oval.

Background

Glandore Oval is a key multi-purpose sports and recreation facility in the northern area of the City of Marion that is well-used by the local community.

The facility is home to community organisations and sporting clubs including the Adelaide Cricket Club and Westminster Old Scholars Football Club. Additionally, Black Forest Primary School has the right to use the oval and cricket nets at certain times under an arrangement with Council.

Whilst Council has made some upgrades to the site over the past five years, the clubhouse is ageing, and the site is in need of improvements.

Oval Precinct Plan

The goal of the Glandore Oval Redevelopment is to create a multi-functional site, including a new sports clubroom that meets the needs of site user groups. In addition, the project will provide recreational facilities for the broader community.

The project will integrate the clubroom with the site and the surrounding area, preserve the oval, improve parking, and pedestrian access to ensure the facility's long-term sustainability.

The State Government of South Australia is co-funding the project with Council providing $5 million through a 2022 State Election commitment.

Key deliverables for the precinct plan include:

  • Review the site and consider options for improved facilities.
  • Provide a new multipurpose building to support the sites activities
  • Integrate the design of the proposed facilities into the broader planning and development of the site and its surroundings.
  • Retain and improve the oval layout where possible.
  • Plan for improved traffic management and car parking, pedestrian/cyclist movements and connectivity.
  • Improve community safety.
  • Accessible Amenities: Provide accessible toilets and changing rooms and pathways, ramps, and seating areas that are wheelchair-friendly.
  • Female-Focused Facilities: provide changerooms and facilities to support the growing participation numbers in junior ages groups and women’s ‘teams.
